2D Transfer System

The 2D Transfer System is a precision instrument for deterministic, dry transfer of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Using a PDMS-based viscoelastic stamping method, the system enables accurate alignment and controlled placement of exfoliated flakes for fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures. The integrated mechanical, optical, and optional thermal control components make it suitable for repeatable, research-grade 2D material assembly without wet chemistry.

Concept

The system combines a rigid vibration-stable base, precision translation stages, and an optical microscope to enable reliable flake pickup and release. Transfer success is governed by controlled alignment, contact area, and peel-off rate, all supported by fine micromanipulation and real-time optical feedback.​

Epi-Illumination Microscope:

Optical microscope with epi-illumination for surface imaging, featuring HDMI camera output for real-time viewing and alignment.

XYθ Sample Positioning Stage:

Precision XYθ stage designed for accurate substrate positioning and rotational alignment. Enables controlled lateral movement and angular adjustment, ensuring repeatable placement during transfer and assembly processes.

XYZ Stamp Control Stage:

Independent XYZ stage dedicated to stamp motion control. Allows fine vertical approach, lateral alignment, and controlled retraction, supporting precise and repeatable PDMS transfer operations.

PDMS Stamp Mounting Platform:

PDMS stamp securely mounted on a rigid steel or glass slide to ensure mechanical stability and flatness. The mounting approach minimizes deformation and drift during contact and release cycles.

Integrated Heating and Temperature Control (Optional):

Optional substrate and stamp heating with closed-loop temperature control. Enables process optimization through controlled thermal conditions, improving adhesion, release behavior, and repeatability for temperature-sensitive transfers.

Mechanical Configuration:

  • Rigid honeycomb base for enhanced stability

  • Microscope base secured using four M6 fasteners

  • XYθ sample stage with adjustable horizontal alignment

  • XYZ stamp stage for precise vertical and lateral control

Optical Configuration:

  • Zoom microscope with interchangeable objectives

  • Integrated epi-illumination for reflected-light imaging

  • HDMI camera output for live monitoring on an external display

Transfer Head:

  • Steel transfer plate with PDMS stamp mounted on a coverslip

  • Downward-facing stamp orientation for controlled contact
